Since joining the SOL community, I find myself approaching March first tentatively, and then with palpable anticipation. Coming into my third year slicing, I looked back at my previous year’s work.
Passing glances turned into tickled interest, smiles playing at the corners of my mouth along with a few stinging tears. Some moments were big, but most were small. The kind of moments that I would not remember had they not been captured on a page for this challenge. I relived my two year old turning three, my oldest becoming a Kindergartener, the world plunging into a pandemic, the birth of our last son, moments with students. There was joy, sorrow, hope, and so much more woven between the lines. Before I knew it this walk down memory lane gave way to building excitement. Writing daily for a month is challenging―it takes carving time out of each day; it demands effort in spotting a story worth putting the pen to; it relies on rereading, revisions, and crafting, crafting, crafting to capture a moment with precision and to nail a unique voice as you record the rhythm of life. Then again, writing for a month also breathes a different kind of life into each day―it places you on the same plane as your students; it connects you with other educators who bring a varied styles to your writing; it opens your eyes to time hidden in the hustle and bustle of daily life and keeps records of moments soon to be forgotten. So here I sit on day one, taking a deep breath and stretching my fingers, ready to capture what the next month has yet to bring.

I love the imagery of the opening sentence of your second paragraph. I could relate to all the emotions that it evokes.

As a first time slicer, your post has made me very excited to try this out for the whole month! I can't wait to be able to look back and see some of the smaller moments that most likely would've been forgotten about.

I've said it before, and I'm sure to say it again, you have a wonderful way with words! I always enjoy reading your writing and I think it makes me (and others) better writers.
