It’s 6:10 am, and I wish it were 7.
Just one more hour… I wishfully think. But it’s not to be. I begrudgingly slip my feet into moccasins, pull on a hoodie, and silently pad to Lucas’s room, careful not to wake any other kids. I turn the knob, swing the door open, and there he is, grinning ear to ear at the new victory of learning to stand in his crib. “Aye, Lukey,” I sigh as we head downstairs together. “You didn’t have one more hour in you today?” We settle in the living room, toys strewn about for entertainment, a laundry basket at my side. I grab a shirt, start to fold, and look up. The sun has begun to rise. That pale morning glow, golden fingers stretching up from the rooftops to the open skies. They brighten the few puffs of clouds, turning them into brilliant splashes of white. The peace from outside matches the quiet of our house. So I sit, folding the forgotten basket of clean clothes, watching my youngest hunt down a soccer ball, letting the rising sun wash away my mild frustration.

The sun can wash away any frustration, especially on the days we need it most. It's in the littlest moments that the greatest joys of life really can be witnessed. I'm also thinking that your son was smiling because you walked in the room. Mom's really are a gift from God.

I literally have never thought of this. Three kids in and I always just see their pride in themselves. "Look at me, Mom! Look what I can do now!" They're so enamored with themselves. But I love the idea of them being just as enamored with it being me that opened the door. Thank you for that insight.

Beautifully written and very well understood. I have an 19 month old who is full of energy. I feel like I never stop washing laundry. Loved the imagery set as the sun began to rise. You painted the picture beautifully.

SO true that we always need a little more time to sleep in the morning, but the little ones can't wait to start the day. I'm glad the sun was shining today to help you enjoy the early wake-up call of Lukey.
